After rebuilding your company file in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise, you might encounter Target Chaining errors in the QBWIN.log (QuickBooks log files). These errors may look like this:
Verify.c (4620) : CHECKPOINT: 1104: Thu Jul 14 15:36:39 Target Chaining: Target ###### in transaction ######, points to 'next' target ###### which is NOT in that transaction
Verify.c (4747) : CHECKPOINT: 3544: Fri Jul 01 11:25:45 Target Chaining: Next target pointer error in transaction #####
In some instances, you might also get an Unrecoverable Error message.
These errors can cause bills (or invoices) and payments to become unlinked, leading to missing names on corresponding payments. You might see "In Version 2.0" in the Entered/Last Modified column instead of actual dates when running Audit Trail or Transaction Detail reports.
Causes of Target Chaining Errors
These errors can occur due to insufficient RAM (memory) allocation during the Verify/Rebuild process or because of a large company file size. If your company file exceeds 1GB, contact us at (855) 227-0700 for assistance in managing your company file.
Fixing Errors in a Smaller Company File (Less Than 1GB)
To fix these errors, follow these steps:
Run Rebuild
Important Reminders:
Do not run Rebuild over a network. Run it from the location where the company file is stored or copy the company file to another location and run Rebuild locally.
Restart your workstation/server before running Rebuild to free up memory.
Ensure that Rebuild is run on a system with the most physical RAM available.
Steps to Rebuild:
Go to the QuickBooks File menu, select Utilities, and then choose Rebuild Data.
Click OK and wait for the Rebuild to finish.
Note: The "Errors we couldn’t fix" section may show inaccurate results immediately following the Rebuild. Please disregard these in some cases.
Run Verify to Confirm No Additional Errors
Go to the QuickBooks File menu, select Utilities, and then choose Verify Data.
Click OK and wait for the Verify to finish.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, you will need to restore a backup that was created prior to the Rebuild that led to the Target Chaining error. If you're unsure which backup to use, open the company file and press F2 (or Ctrl+1) to bring up the Product Information screen. Look for the RB date in the "Versions used on File" section.
Restoring a Backup and Next Steps
After Restoring the Company File:
Press F2 (or Ctrl+1) to check the Product Information page.
Ensure there is no recent RB date or that it doesn't match the timeframe when the error began.
Run the Rebuild utility again, followed by a Verify.
If errors persist and issues with bills/invoices remain, try restoring another backup.
If you cannot locate a good backup, you may need to create a new company file and re-enter your transactions. We are here to assist you with this process if needed.
