What is the difference between Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Business Central (Essentials or Premium)

A fair amount of confusion is building in the community about the direction that Microsoft is taking for the foreseeable future. As other Accounting and ERP System vendors, such as Intuit, have transitioned from an On-Premise Software License model to a subscription model, so is Microsoft. The Dynamics NAV and the Dynamics 365 Business Central (Essential and Premium) product are IDENTICAL to each other. They functionally provide the same capabilities and features. Some of Microsoft competitors are making the statement such as “NAV” is dead and nothing could be further from the truth. Microsoft is simply spending the next 12-18 months to migrate the revenue model from licensing to subscription. Until December 31st, 2018, you will continue to have the option and choice to purchase a LICENSE of the Dynamics NAV product. This will come to an end by January 1st, 2019. However, you can still run the NAV (Business Central) system ON PREMISE as Microsoft offer you to purchase an ON PREMISE subscription to the Business Central (NAV) system.

As of TODAY you have the following options:

  1. Purchase a Microsoft Dynamics NAV License for On-Premise (until 12-31-18)

  2. Purchase Business Central (Essentials or Premium) Subscription for On-Premise

  3. Purchase Business Central Subscription with hosting on the Microsoft Data Center

Our corporate clients have many reasons to choose an “On Premise” option over a Microsoft hosted setup and this choice will not be removed. The only changes that are occurring that as of January 1st, 2019, you will ONLY be able to purchase a subscription to the system.
